Priya googled "Udyam registration". The first three results were ads for "udyam-registration.org" — ₹999, "instant certificate". She almost clicked.

Then she read the small print. They just submit your details on the actual government portal — for free — and pocket the fee. Let's just go to the real one.

🪙 In 60 seconds
  • Only one official portal: udyamregistration.gov.in. Government fee: ₹0.
  • You need: Aadhaar (linked to mobile) + PAN + GSTIN (if applicable). Done.
  • Benefits — cheaper loans, 50% rebate on patent fees, 45-day payment law protection, eligibility for govt tenders.
  • Avoid any URL that ends in .org / .in / .net. The official one is .gov.in.

What is MSME / Udyam, in plain English

MSME = Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise. The Government of India offers a basket of benefits to businesses in this category — lower-rate loans, protection from delayed payments, reserved tenders, patent fee rebates.

To get those benefits, you need to be officially classified. That classification happens via Udyam Registration — a free 10-minute online process. The certificate is your URN (Udyam Registration Number).

Are you actually an MSME?

The classification is by both investment in plant & machinery AND turnover. The higher one wins.

Micro

Most freelancers / shops

Investment ≤ ₹1 cr Turnover ≤ ₹5 cr

Where the vast majority sit. Maximum benefit basket per scheme.

Small

Growing trade / service

Investment ≤ ₹10 cr Turnover ≤ ₹50 cr

Still in MSME bracket. Almost identical benefits to Micro.

Medium

Mid-market

Investment ≤ ₹50 cr Turnover ≤ ₹250 cr

Last tier in MSME. Above this you're "large" — no scheme benefits.

Why bother registering?

The big ones, in the order they actually matter:

👉 Faster payments from buyers. Under the MSMED Act, any buyer must pay an MSME supplier within 45 days. Beyond that, compound interest at 3× bank rate kicks in. Enterprises take this seriously — it changes how your invoices get prioritised.
👉 Priority sector lending. Banks offer loans at lower rates (often 1–2% below market) to MSMEs.
👉 Government tenders. Many departments reserve 25%+ of procurement for MSMEs. Some tenders are MSME-exclusive.
👉 Credit guarantee schemes (CGTMSE), interest subvention, technology upgradation grants — gateway is your Udyam.
👉 Patent / trademark filings — 50% rebate on application fees.
👉 Easier downstream registrations — many government schemes (Udyam Sakhi, PMEGP, etc.) need Udyam as the prerequisite.

The 6-step registration

1
Open the only real portal

udyamregistration.gov.in. Bookmark it. Any other URL is a middleman.

2
Click "For New Entrepreneurs"

If you held an old UAM, pick "For those having registration as EM-II or UAM" instead.

3
Aadhaar + OTP

Aadhaar of the proprietor / managing partner / signatory. Must be linked to a mobile that can receive OTP.

4
PAN + business details

Type of organisation, location, NIC code(s) for your activity, employee count, investment, turnover, bank account.

5
Submit

System auto-classifies you as Micro / Small / Medium based on the values you entered. Done in under a minute.

6
Download your URN certificate

Issued instantly. Format: UDYAM-XX-00-0001234. Save the PDF. Add it to your invoice footer.

The ₹999 scam — how to spot it

⚠️ The middleman pattern

Search "Udyam registration" on Google and the top results will be paid ads from sites like udyam-registration.org, udyam-portal.in, udyamcertificate.in. They charge ₹499 to ₹1,999. They just submit your info on the official free portal and email you the same PDF you'd get for free. The only legitimate URL is udyamregistration.gov.in. Anything else is a markup.

What you'll need to keep handy

Udyam registration is free. Anyone charging you for it is selling air. Same form, same portal, same certificate — for ₹0.

What if you don't have Aadhaar / PAN?

If you run an informal micro enterprise without Aadhaar or PAN, the Udyam Assist Platform exists to onboard you through specified intermediary agencies and SIDBI. Walk into a District Industries Centre or a SIDBI branch and ask.

What changes after registration?

The day after you have a URN:

👉 Add "MSME Registered · Udyam URN: UDYAM-XX-...." to your invoice footer. Buyers notice.
👉 When sending invoices to enterprises, attach a one-line MSMED reminder ("payment due within 45 days as per MSMED Act"). It changes how invoices get prioritised.
👉 Bookmark champions.gov.in — the MSME grievance portal. Use it if a buyer doesn't pay within 45 days.
👉 Update Udyam annually with new turnover / investment figures (auto-pulls from ITR + GST data; you just confirm).

Quick answers

Yes. Service businesses are eligible — IT services, consulting, design, content, repair, etc. The investment threshold considers only plant / machinery, so most service freelancers easily qualify as Micro.

Mandatory only if your business is liable for GST. If you're below the GST threshold, GSTIN isn't required for Udyam.

Yes — login at udyamregistration.gov.in with your URN, update turnover / employee / investment values. The system reclassifies automatically each year based on previous-year ITR / GST data.

One Udyam per business / PAN. List all activities under the same registration with primary and secondary NIC codes.

UAM was discontinued. Old UAM holders had to migrate to Udyam by 31 March 2022. If you still hold only UAM, register fresh on Udyam.
